The first time I heard about Baxter Blue was when my friend turned up to work looking smoking hot in a brand new pair of glasses. We’d been working in the same office for over a year, so I knew she had 20/20 vision. At first, I thought she was wearing them to look more intelligent but when I asked her about the accessory, I learnt that her motive was far less superficial.
Like most of us, my friend sits in front a computer from 9am-5pm and the extended screen time was making her eye’s ache. During her search for optical solutions, she read an article about a Sydney-side start-up that was waging war on the harmful effects of blue light and she decided to get on board.
After wearing them for a few weeks, she noticed the specs made a real difference, so I jumped online and did some research of my own. I looked at Baxter Blue’s website, stalked their social media pages and read every contributed article with their name in it. From itchy eyes to pounding headaches, every testimonial was bang on the money so I decided to take a risk. I invested $89 in a pair of slick Lane Maple specs and after living in them for over a month, I knew the hype around the eyewear company was real. I was able to focus for longer periods of time, my eyes felt drastically less tired and my headaches disappeared completely.
Here’s what you need to know…
What is Baxter Blue?
Baxter Blue is an eyewear company that produces a fashionable range of non-prescription glasses to block out harmful blue light and alleviate the symptoms of digital eye strain.
What is Blue Light?
Blue light has a wavelength between 380nm and 500nm making it one of the shortest and highest energy wavelengths in the visible spectrum. It exists naturally in the form of sunlight and is important for maintaining healthy circadian rhythm. It also boosts alertness, improves memory and elevates mood.
So what’s the problem?
We consume too much of it. Blue light can be artificially generated and is used in the production of digital screens such as computers, smartphones and TVs. The human eye is not developed enough to block out blue light, so overexposure can cause permanent damage to one’s eyesight.
The effects can be devastating and with the amount of time we spend scrolling through our newsfeeds, watching Netflix and researching cryptocurrencies, it’s time we all got educated.
What are the symptoms of digital eye strain?
Some of the most common symptoms of digital eye-strain include head-aches, dry eyes, blurry vision and neck pain. You probably thought these were completely normal and your eyes would be fighting fit in a couple of hours, but the damage is a lot more extensive than that.
Medical research has found that exposure to blue light can lead to damaged retinal cells and long-term vision problems such as age-related macular degeneration which causes blindness.
I don’t know about you, but that sounds pretty damn dismal to me.
Just as you protect your skin from UV radiation, you should ensure you defend your eyes from blue light. At $89 each, Baxter Blue glasses are an affordable solution for people who are trying to relieve the effects of digital eye-strain without sacrificing their personal style.
The company has partnered with Restoring Vision which means every pair of Baxter Blue glasses sold gives someone in a developing country the gift of clear eyesight.
What’s not to love about that!
